Nobody knows that Laurel Bay can see and talk to ghosts. When she inherits a funeral home, she is forced to return from the city to the small town of Witch Woods to breathe life into the business. It is a grave responsibility, but Laurel is determined that this will be no dead-end job.
There she has to contend with her manipulative and overly religious mother, more than one ghost, and a secretive but handsome accountant.
When the murder of a local woman in the funeral home strangles the finances, can Laurel solve the murder?
Or will this be the death of her business?

a cozy mystery

by Ashley Magruder

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review... A ghost of a chance is a very nice book... It is very funny and it is also very serious in some places... when you think of working in a funeral home you don't think things would be funny but some things turned out to be hilarious when these ghosts appear out of nowhere and scare her... Plus she has a murder to solve on top of all of this... She's just trying to bring life back into the funeral home and is she does not expect to try to solve a murder... but I guess we have to keep reading to find out what happens... On to the next book...

Tongue-in-cheek Mystery!

by Emily Pennington

Laurel Bay has come home from Melbourne to attend her father’s funeral. Coming home brought her in closer contact with her overly pious mother – and this was not a pleasant thing for Laurel. She much preferred being 3 days’ drive away from her in Melbourne! After the memorial service, Laurel saw her mother outside complaining loudly to everyone about how Pastor Green should have been trying to save souls; instead, all he did was talk about Larry, her deceased husband!

When Laurel and her mother went to hear the Will read, Laurel found out she has just inherited the Witch Woods Funeral Home and its surrounding property! Her mother was upset and said Laurel had no idea how to run that business and that she herself should own it. Laurel agreed and offered to give it to her, but the Will stipulated that the business be sold if Laurel did not take it. Selling it was not acceptable to her mother. It was imperative that she keep watch on Laurel and that she also should be in charge of “the purse strings” – therefore, Laurel would have to make her mother General Manager! As they were leaving, she told Mr. Goddard to change his name because it was blasphemous and he would not get into heaven. She had already spoken to the pastor about that.

At her first memorial service, the Pastor had not yet shown up. She went to look for him and found him with the deceased’s grandson who wanted one last look in the casket. Laurel gazed at the floor until a scream sounded and the grandson fell through the curtain and exposed the casket to all of the chapel guests! Not only was the grandmother there, but another body -- the girl from the café down the street -- was draped over hers with a knife in its back! Because Laurel can see and speak with ghosts, the dead café worker asked for Laurel’s help finding who killed her. Can Laurel solve the mystery? Will she find the killer? Will she save her failing business after this horrible incident?

This was a fun book which was not meant to be taken too seriously (so you are allowed to laugh at the chaos)! As Laurel tackles the serious matter of murder, she does it in a flamboyant way that has the reader stifling a grin behind his or her hand! There are many characters introduced and it can make for a bit of confusion. But truths do come out. Grab a copy and find out how all of this is ultimately resolved! This book made me laugh out loud in places, overall I really enjoyed the book and the storyline. It was very entertaining and although it's not my normal go to type of book I will definitely be looking to read the next books in this series.

I didn't like the mother character at all, but then I don't think we were supposed to, that said I hope in future books her character mellows or she isn't featured as much.

Overall it was a very entertaining enjoyable read.

A great story about Laurel stepping up to her life and helping others gain completion in their lives and deaths. A well written book by the author with plenty of action and mystery that captures your attention quickly and hangs onto it til the end of the book. I loved this story and the different characters.

This series shows a lot of promise! I enjoyed the main character, Laurel, but her mother was a totally different story.

I will definitely be reading the second book in this series. I recommend you do as well.

Oh my gosh, her mother...!!!

I love Morgana Best's writing style. I love how she always includes that one character who you love to hate, who is simply so irritating that you just wish that the heroine would turn around and verbally slap them seven ways to Sunday. I truly believe that she writes those characters so that we come back simply to see how the main heroine will eventually deal with them, and push them out of her life.
Laurel Bay has come back to Witch Woods after her father passes away. Unbeknownst to either her or her bullying religious zealot of a mother, her father has left his funeral-home/undertaker business to Laurel. However, that's not the least of Laurel's problems; no, that lies in her ability to see and speak to the dead, and since a murder has occurred and the dead girl's ghost is not at rest, it's up to Laurel to help find the murderer.
I really enjoyed this book, the first in this series, and I *really* hope that Laurel manages to wrest the business from her mother's managing claws, and gives her the set-down she not only deserves, but needs!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I found this to be a very funny story about a young girl who becomes the owner of a funeral home after the death of her father. Her outspoken mother is devastated to learn that she was not left the business and causes havoc in her wake. There is a murder and a ghost to add to the confusion. If you are looking for a light hearted read I thoroughly recomend this book to readers of all ages.

Great storyline, fun and with a spooky twist. Poor Laurel, I don't know how she copes with such an overbearing mother. She would send me screaming for the hills! Great start to a series.
