About the author

I grew up in the middle of a cornfield in Illinois. I got serious about writing at age 15 with a book report titled "Beerwulf by Unabridged."

Later, I wrote The Fallacy Detective and The Thinking Toolbox--books that teach critical thinking skills to unsuspecting teenagers.

My books have sold over two hundred thousand copies since 2002 and won numerous awards.

After spending a while trying to write another book on logic, I decided to go for something very different--a story about friendship.

Archer and Zowie is a middle-grade sci-fi book about aliens, outer space, and how to be friends with someone very different from you. It has the character of Beverly Cleary's Romona Quimby, with the wild imagination of Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Archer and Zowie shows how having the right friends can free us to be ourselves.

Some of My influences are Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes, Madeleine L' Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia, the landscapes of the American West and New Zealand, and lots of Wikipedia articles on Astrophysics.

I live in Durango, Colorado with my wife, Desi. I enjoys rock climbing with friends and writing stories.
