Jeanine Kitchel writes about Mexico, the Maya, and the Yucatán. The author’s broad knowledge of the land and culture came about gradually, over decades, as she and her husband traveled the country, ending up in the Yucatán. What started as lazy beach vacations turned into land hunting expeditions fueled by the dream of escaping their hectic nine to five lives in San Francisco. By 1989 they bought land in Puerto Morelos, a fishing village south of Cancun, where they broke ground for their new house. In 1997 they left California behind and drove south with Max, their cat. As she settled into Mexico life, Kitchel, who graduated with a degree in journalism, began to write travel articles for newspapers and Mexico websites before branching into fiction. Her travel memoir, Where the Sky is Born: Living in the Land of the Maya, and Maya 2012 Revealed: Demystifying the Prophecy, a journalistic view of the Maya 2012 calendar phenomenon, are available on amazon.com. Book one, Wheels Up—A Novel of Drugs, Cartels and Survival, began Layla’s struggle, and is available on amazon.com. Tulum Takedown, book 2 in the trilogy, launches March 2020.
