My name is Jake and I’ve been writing since 2013. I started writing as a way to battle a depression I was in. There was something appealing about escaping into a world that I created and controlled. Unfortunately, it didn’t help much. I did find something I love to do though (whether I’m good at it is another thing haha). It wasn’t until I started editing my first book that writing sunk its hooks into me.
I originally wasn’t going to sell my books or even taking writing seriously. That was until I had my first son in 2016. That was when I decided I needed to do something more than wake up, go to work, and come home. I had two fully written books sitting in my email collecting dust, so to speak. I started looking into self-publishing, after seeing how expensive it was to go the traditional route, and felt quite optimistic. I spent three years, off and on, editing my first book. I quickly realized how tedious editing was, but it was also more fun on some levels. Going back through and adding a tiny detail that could be missed, but would end up in an “aha!” moment was and is my favorite part of editing.
Before I even wrote my first chapter, I read a lot of James Patterson and Matthew Reilly. I specifically enjoy the way Reilly builds relationships between characters. I also read a lot of graphic novels and was amazed at how they were able to build a vast universe of characters who interacted with each outside of their own storyline. Those two authors and comics have had a big influence on my writing.
